BOTH THE LONG AND SHORT ROCKERS
ARE USED FOR PITCHING DRILLS
DYNAMIC BALANCE:
WIND-UP, HIGH SET, DRIVE AND
FINISH/FOLLOW THROUGH
The BASEBALLANCE can benefit a pitcher’s dynamic balance, from his first step to begin the wind-up through pick off moves and positions thorughout the act of pitching: the drive, the delivery, the landing and follow through. “Leaking,” “Drifting,” and “Falling Off” are terms often used to describe a pitcher that hasn’t featured or maximized good balance. Such defects are easily felt and recognized through use of the BASEBALLANCE.
Using the LONG rockers, the pitcher tries to land on a balanced BASEBALLANCE, as opposed to a forward tilt. The pitcher understands through feel, the down and out movement that is required to make this happen, as opposed to the jump out to the landing foot. This is often referred to as a soft, front side landing.
Using the short rockers, the pitcher begins his wind up and comes to the high set or leg up position and feels the BASEBALLANCE isolate where his weight is positioned, if off balance. If too much toward third or first, the pitcher will create muscle memory as he makes the adjustments. The same applies if too much toward second or home. He uses the white line as the pitching rubber or starting position.
Using the long rockers, the BASEBALLANCE also allows the white guide line through the middle of the board to serve as a guide, so the pitcher can see if his explosive movements are directed toward home plate. This self-corrective activity isolates and helps to trouble shoot throwing across one’s body or stepping away from forward momentum.
While using the long rockers, a proper follow through becomes a natural movement with the use of the BASEBALLANCE. After releasing the ball or completing the throwing motion, forward momentum in transformed into a follow through as a result of the BASEBALLANCE’s rockers and rocking motion. The rockers force the pitcher to bend over and feel the downward flow often referred to as “throwing downhill.”
DRIVING OFF THE INSIDE OF BACK KNEE
SETTING THE BACK HIP, SITTING INSIDE PLANT KNEE
As the pitcher comes to the high set position either from the wind up or the stretch, he uses the BASEBALLANCE with the short rockers. Facing the long side of the platform, the pitcher takes his position from the wind up or the set and once at the high set, the pitcher feels the platform rock forward putting his weight on the inside of the back knee while loading or setting the back hip: preparing for explosion to the plate, from the back side. From there, the pitcher goes down and out toward the plate. Emphasis is on the power load position inside the back knee allowing him to drive toward home plate.
